I just read an article in Curbed.com about new architecture designed to help homeowners age gracefully. The article takes a look at the philosophy and work of architect Matthias Hollwich who’s new book, New Aging, offers a radical blueprint for rethinking and redesigning old age. His book is a reminder that aging is a gift and features simple ideas to help us experience life smarter, better, and longer.

Hollwich’s mission is to promote a design philosophy that makes sure every individual is comfortable, connected, and happy at any age. Drawing from his work and research around the topic of aging, combined with his hands-on experience designing spaces for the elderly, the New York-based architect has discovered that accommodating the eldest among us actually helps us create real communities that are more socially connected and accessible.

“My suggestion is to make it personal,” says Hollwich. “Forget about the theory and look at the little things, think about how you would want to live your entire life. Too many people wake up on the topic of aging when they retire, and that’s too late. We’re active and influential today; now is the most important moment to take charge and make an impact.”

Hollwich knows all about the topic of aging gracefully. He became interested in the subject as a child in Germany, where his grandmother passed away at home surrounded by family.
According to Hollwich, we need to take everything we associate with aging and throw it out the window; forget about the loss of freedom and vitality, the cold and sterile nursing homes, and the frightening boredom. Instead, we need to find new ways of shaping our environment utilizing some simple, visionary principles designed to evolve as you age. With advice ranging from practical design tips for making your home safer and more comfortable, to thought-provoking ideas on how we work, relax, and interact with our neighbors, New Aging will inspire you and your loved ones to live smarter today so you can live better tomorrow.

Wouldn’t you like to age gracefully in your own luxury estate in Montecito, Hope Ranch or any of Santa Barbara’s upscale communities? This is an important issue we all should consider when buying property. Please call me at 805.886.9378 or email me at Cristal@montecito-estate.com and I will be happy to show you what’s on the market right now, including pocket listings you will not find on the MLS. I really like Hollwich’s ideology and am happy to help you figure out how to select the right property where you and your family can grow and stay connected.
