A Bit of Summerland History
Summerland was founded in 1888 by land developer and Spiritualist H.L. Williams, who sold dozens of tiny lots to his followers for $25 each and built a church (complete with a séance room). In the 1880s, the Summerland Oil Field was developed and consisted of several wooden derricks on the beach and on piers out into the ocean. In fact, this is the site of the world’s first offshore oil well. The derricks and some production remained until around 1940. Slowly, but surely, the beach was cleaned up, the Spiritualists departed, California Highway 101 was constructed partly through the town, homes were built, small businesses began thriving and Summerland became the lovely California beach town it is today.
