2017 Renovation Trends

Architecture Renovation Style Design Graphic to show Renovation TrendsComfort is key this year

In a recent blog, I shared 15 stellar renovation and design apps. This post is going to take a look at the 2017 renovation trends so you can decide which apps to download. The renovation focus this year is less on what’s missing, such as ceiling height, and more on design tricks and aesthetic choices to make your space comfortable, bright, and personalized as much as possible.

Growth in Home Improvements
According to Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, there will be an 8% growth in home improvement and repair expenditures by the second quarter of 2017. Why does the Harvard study think homeowners will spend more on home improvements this year? The main factor is the uptick in mortgage rates. Homeowners are expected to turn their attention and money toward renovations, focusing on those that will add value when it comes time to sell. According to the 2017 report just released, these are the prominent trends to consider:

  • In painting, think Greige—a mix of gray and beige— one of the hottest colors around, despite it being such a subtle tone
  • Projects that improve curb appeal
  • Replacing siding
  • Adding stone veneer
  • Replacing the roof
  • Getting a new garage door
  • Replacing a run-of-the-mill entry door with an attractive yet tough steel one
  • Creating an upscale bathroom remodel
  • Remodeling the master suite
  • Adding a second story
  • Adding a family room
  • Doing a major kitchen remodel
  • Replacing windows
  • Adding an outside deck
  • “Smart homes” and “connected homes” are becoming more popular, as technological advances offer homeowners flexibility, convenience, and even money savings
  • Larger, more elaborate showering spaces
  • Basements that serve as retreats, whether for visiting guests, work-at-home parents, or devoted hobbyists
  • Recessed lighting in interesting patterns
  • Using a combination of types, styles, and stains of wood for flooring, walls and in furniture
  • Connecting kitchen, eating and living spaces
  • Building an attic getaway
  • Creating an outside lifestyle space
  • Getting a backup generator
