Creating a designer fire pit, then gathering around it with your friends and family are two of the most rewarding perks of owning your own home. For those of us lucky enough to live in Santa Barbara, using a fire pit can be a year-round luxury. That’s why this article in Realty Times caught my eye; “Designer Tips For Choosing a Fire Pit.” Before you build yours, check out these 4 tips:
- Location – Choose the location of your fire pit carefully. For safety and security, an outdoor fire pit should be at least 10 feet away from your home and should never be placed on a wooden deck. Check with your local city or county website for specific requirements about placement in relationship to the house.
- Consider the Base – Today, outdoor fire pits come in all shapes and sizes but it all boils down to three base styles: an actual fire pit that is dug into the ground, a coffee table fire pit, or a raised bowl style.
- Finish with bravado – You’ll have a lot of choices in terms of materials for your new outdoor fire pit. For instance, mobile fire pits are almost exclusively made of metal, while stationary fire pits offer a custom look to match your home. Stone finishes that resemble slate, natural stone, limestone or even pavers are a safe and solid choice, as are bronze, copper and stainless steel.
- Fire or Propane? Although you may love the smell and sound of an actual wood-burning fire, many communities have restrictions about whether and when open fires are permitted. Propane is a good second choice that’s both efficient and super safe, too.
Always keep in mind that when you use your designer fire pit, you are dealing with open flames. I suggest you strategically place a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
