Have you heard about the World Green Building Council? The goal of this organization is to create an environment that will give people better, brighter, healthier spaces to live, work and play. The organization’s latest report, “The Business Case for Green Building: A Review of the Costs and Benefits for Developers, Investors and Occupants,” focuses on the economic and social benefits of green building, a movement that has matured over time.
Here in highly populated California, residents face droughts, smog, flooding and water pollution issues. We are not alone; communities around the world share these environmental issues. Here’s the good news: creating environmentally sensitive home designs and construction methods is now a half-trillion dollar industry in the United State, and more than a trillion dollar industry worldwide.
The report points to an increasingly compelling business case for green buildings; providing evidence that constructing sustainable buildings is more than just saving our planet (although that is a very important part of the movement). Greening our built environment in neighborhoods and cities can deliver large-scale environmental solutions such as climate change mitigation, energy security, resource conservation and job creation; resulting in long-term resilience and quality of life. The bottom line: going green makes clear business sense.
