Fight the winter blahs with interior design tips to banish winter gloom
According to a story in Zillow.com, most people naturally gravitate toward sunny spots so it’s important to follow these interior design tips focusing on keeping your home cheerful. Think curling up on the couch near a window, sitting at a desk in a sun-soaked office, or lounging near a table lamp to read a good book. Here are 4 tips to banish winter from your home:
1) Go Nordic
What do you think of the Scandinavian interior design trend so prominent today? I like it! The all-white style has become increasingly popular thanks to a growing desire for light and bright spaces that are equal parts clutter-free and totally cozy. The look is perfect for Santa Barbara. And it’s super easy to sprinkle in some Scandinavian elements. Just add a single piece of bright white furniture, like a sofa or arm chair, and complement it with gray, navy, or black throw pillows. Or, add some white shelving in your home against a bright white wall. The white-on-white look is inviting.
2) Add Mirrors
Mirrors reflect light flawlessly, and are ideal for rooms that only have a small window, or little to no natural lighting. All you have to do is place one directly across from a window and our Santa Barbara sun will light up the entire room. Or hang a few small ones on the wall perpendicular to the window for a more subtle reflection. Mirrors with interesting frames can add visual effects for extra impact in any room.
3) The Layered Look
Layering lighting is a key design concept that applies to every room. Start by making sure you have appropriate ceiling lights fitted with bright bulbs to create the foundation. Next, choose accent lighting, like mini pendants or a table or floor lamp to add symmetry for a balanced aesthetic. Finally, use task lighting in rooms that require expert lighting. Task lighting can be sconces on the sides of a mirror, or recessed lighting perched underneath cabinetry.
4) Swap Out Dark Fabrics
Swap out your dark, heavy fabrics for light and airy styles. Heavy insulated curtains can easily be changed with a few panels of sheer drapes for an instantly ethereal space. Dark or heavily patterned duvets can go back into hibernation for light scallop designs in white or French gray to freshen up your bedroom. Other items that can be swapped are lampshades, pillows, throw blankets, area rugs, and upholstery covers.
