MOXI: Santa Barbara’s Newest Museum

MOXI: Santa Barbara's Newest MuseumCheck out MOXI’s powerfully playful exhibits and experiences.
Discover, explore and play in the new 17,000 square foot museum called MOXI: The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation. It features hands-on exhibits and experiences for families and curious minds alike. It’s a place that is filled with attractions for visitors and locals to learn, explore, and see.
With a mission to ignite learning through interactive experiences in science and creativity, Santa Barbara’s newest destination is a place where you can explore and discover new things about the world around you, ask questions, seek answers and have a blast doing so. MOXI is filled with interactive exhibits and experiences designed in collaboration with the award-winning museum planning firm Gyroscope, and fabricated by Creative Machines, Science Museum of Minnesota and Roto.
More than 20-years ago, a group of dedicated and dynamic community volunteers came together with the desire to create a world-class museum in their own backyard. They wanted to create a space that would provide opportunities for learning outside the traditional classroom. After a few starts and stops, in 2013, the City of Santa Barbara made it possible for this place on a plot of unused land on lower State Street. Now that spot of land has been leased for the next 50 years!
The Barry Berkus-designed building also has the distinction of being the first LEED Gold certified museum in Santa Barbara County. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is changing the way we think about how buildings and communities are planned, constructed, maintained and operated. Leaders around the world have made LEED the most widely used third-party verification for green buildings, with around 1.85 million square feet being certified daily.
MOXI features a devotion to both “science and creativity” at its very core. Leave your expectations about exhibits at the door and get ready to discover, play and engage in a new way. The building has three floors filled with loads of interactive experiences, organized around seven themes that all relate to science, technology, engineering, arts and math. There’s a Giant Guitar that invites visitors to enter, and a Light Track, which is all about the hues and shades that enrich our world.
The museum’s location on State Street close to the train station makes it easily accessible for children of all ages to visit via Amtrak. However you arrive, a day spent at MOXI will be different each time you visit: with new things to see, new approaches to take, new challenges to solve and new discoveries to uncover.
