Beer connoisseurs delight in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone diversity
Everyone’s loving the great drinking diversity found in The Funk Zone in Santa Barbara. A big part of that diversity is credited to the emerging craft brewing scene. The kind folks at SantaBarbaraca.com have compiled a list of the best breweries in the Santa Barbara South Coast.
THE FUNK ZONE
The Funk Zone is Santa Barbara’s growing arts community that’s also home to the craft breweries, the Urban Wine Trail, small retailers and surfers. Bordered by State Street, Stearns Wharf and East Beach, the Funk Zone comprises about ten very walkable blocks adjacent to the train station, ocean and downtown Santa Barbara.
If you like beer, you’ve probably already tasted the hops of Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. This Funk Zone fixture has a large selection of beers (25 on tap!), and is a friendly location to linger all afternoon. Bring the dogs, have pizza delivered from Lucky Penny next door, and kick back with a pint of the Blood Orange Summer Squeeze. Once you’re in the sunshine and under Figueroa’s signature red umbrellas, you won’t want to leave. Visiting on a weekend? Make sure to stay for live music on Saturdays.
Then there’s Lama Dog Tap Room + Bottle Shop. Not only is there a huge selection of rotating beers on tap, 20 to be exact, the menu also includes cider, wine, and boozy kombucha. If this isn’t enough, check out the interior décor, which features a Warhol-like mural in dedication to the resident dog, Lama. Being the dog lover that I am, Lama’s portrait is a big draw! I love that this location is extremely dog-friendly. Choose to sit inside at the large communal table, or opt for a bit of sunshine on the outdoor patio. Finally, if you’re looking for grub while you indulge in the large selection of libations, The Nook serves up some seriously delicious eats.
Don’t care for beer? No worries. You can also check out the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail in the Funk Zone, a walkable assortment of some of the area’s best tasting rooms. From smooth Chardonnays to finicky Pinot Noirs to robust blends, you’re sure to fall in love with a bottle or two.
Then there’s the dining options in the Funk Zone. I enjoy going to Metropulos Fine Foods. Serving up amazing lunch fare, Metropulos also has a pantry area allowing patrons to take home specialty ingredients. Another fun option is to grab a meal from one of the gourmet food trucks known to frequent the area, particularly on weekends.
