Adult Treehouse? That’s Right! They’re Not Just for Kids Anymore

Adult Treehouse

Beautiful tree house (near Hamburg – Germany)

Our Mediterranean climate makes Santa Barbara the perfect place to build an adult treehouse

I just read a story in the Wall Street Journal about a growing new trend: the adult treehouse. I’ve blogged previously about the man cave, and the popularity of the she shed, but I hadn’t considered modern-day adult treehouses. The story made me think about how perfect our Santa Barbara weather is for one of these mini-masterpieces.

Today’s treehouses are not simple play spaces for children. They’re places for adults to unwind, pursue their hobbies and even work. Professional treehouse designers are building everything from breweries to recording studios in the trees. There’s even a treehouse apartment building in Turin, Italy, pictured in this blog. The building is composed of 63 units built in about 150 trees, created for apartment dwellers to fulfill their childhood dreams of living inside a massive tree.

Statistics show that nine out of ten tree houses built today are for adults. Nationally, there are about 15 companies that make building treehouses for adults their primary business. These companies are composed of specialized teams of engineers and interior designers who build custom-designed backyard escapes.

O2 Treehouse, a California-based company that will be appearing in an upcoming episode of Animal Planet’s popular show Treehouse Masters offers treehouse consultations, construction, and installation in the U.S. and abroad. Central to the philosophy of O2 Treehouse is “advancing harmony with the natural world and strengthening relationships between one another through time spent at a new elevation.” Building one typically takes between two days to nine months, depending on the size and complexity of the project. O2 Treehouse quotes on a custom basis because every tree is different. You can expect to pay between $35,000 and $200,000 for a custom structure.

The sky is the limit when it comes to designing a treehouse. The first step is to consider what you need and want that extra space for and how you want it to function. Customers can choose a style that will complement their house: anything from mid-century modern to contemporary and mission craftsman style.

If you can dream it, someone can build it. For inspiration, check out this article in HiConsumption featuring amazing examples of the adult treehouse.
