We all know about Albert Einstein, the brilliant physicist behind the theories of relativity and the winner of a Nobel Prize. But did you know that he was also someone who loved bicycles, music and compasses? The Houzz Shop collection includes a little something to honor all his interests.
While Einstein was growing up in Germany, a compass, of all things, fascinated the young genius. He was interested in how the device moved by an invisible force. That curiosity led him to discover geometry at age 12, which many experts believe is where the seeds of his genus began. Then, at 16, the young Einstein began pondering a beam of light, wondering what it might look like if he was running next to it.
He had a tumultuous childhood, but finally found his place in Switzerland where he studied and worked at the patent office in Bern. It was easy work and allowed Einstein to think about other interesting things like what that beam of light would look like if he ran beside it. In 1905 Einstein formed his theory of relativity: that the speed of light is constant. He famously said, “I thought of that while riding my bicycle.”
