Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Celebrates 100 Years

The warm winter weather we’re experiencing right now is the perfect time to appreciate some air conditioning and culture at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The much-loved institution is celebrating 100 years of service to the Santa Barbara Community. The Museum also maintains a diverse set of educational programs for all age levels, from pre-school children through adults and senior citizens.

The Museum’s Mission Canyon Campus, a cluster of Spanish Revival-style buildings, is set on 17 acres along Mission Creek. You can see more than 3.5 million artifacts and specimens in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, vertebrate and invertebrate biology, geology and paleontology, art, library, and archives. The collections explore changes in nature and culture over time designed to preserve our natural and cultural legacy. This place is an absolute indispensable tool for natural history research, even for those of us who haven’t studied the topic.

The Sea Center, located on Stearns Wharf, is owned and operated by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and offers numerous marine exhibits fulfilling the mission to inspire a passion for the natural world.

Both the original Museum of Natural History and the newer separate Sea Center offer a diversity of programs for members of our community and visitors to enjoy. Both are open daily from 10:00 AM–5:00 PM (except New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day).
