Consumer Trends: Reuse, Remake and Refrain

Hands holding the earth that is cut in half with grass and a tree growing and three butterflies flying to show Reuse, Remake and RefrainWe’ve all heard by now about the consumer trends to reuse, remake and refrain where companies try to extend the usefulness of a product, rather than merely shrink its environmental footprint. Retailers are selling goods and products reworked from discarded scraps. Textile makers are experimenting with longer-lasting fabrics. And in the real estate sector, we’re seeing spectacular transformations of odd structures transformed into livable dwellings.

The latest issue of Curbed showcases ten amazing examples from around the world. I was inspired by this assortment of very odd water towers, architectural remnants of bygone wars, and even kookier spaces that have been converted into amazing homes. Here are my three favorites:

In Bredenbury, England, an old railway station has been turned into a charming two-bedroom home. Set on 2.76 acres, the station turned home includes a kitchen/diner and sitting room, plus studio space with additional kitchen units.

Then there’s the historic Victorian water tower has been transformed into a whimsical three-bedroom home, complete with an oak spiral staircase in Hertford, England. The darling converted water tower sits on its own roomy, gated lot. The landmark property could be yours for only $1.8M.

Check out this Le Corbusier-designed boiler room turned grungy-cool pad in Briey-en-Forêt, France. This dwelling once housed the boiler room for Le Corbusier’s iconic Radiant City (Cité radieuse) complex nearby. You may recognize the name of the Swiss-born French architect who belonged to the first generation of the so-called International school of architecture. The space is now outfitted with all the essentials by its current owners well-suited for the architect known for building with steel and reinforced concrete, emphasizing clear forms and structures.
