Are you sleeping in a bedroom sanctuary? Or does your bedroom actually prevent you from getting your recommended 8-hours a night? The subject of sleep is increasingly recognized as important to public health, with sleep insufficiency linked to motor vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, and medical and other occupational errors. In fact, The National Institutes of Health estimates that roughly 30% of the general population experiences sleep disruptions, and approximately 10% of those are involved in some type of hazardous impairment consistent with the diagnosis of insomnia.
Your bedroom could be part of the problem. Sleep experts say one of the keys to a good nights sleep is to create a bedroom sanctuary. Here are some ideas on how to set up your bedroom so you sleep more soundly every night.
1. Is your bedroom and bed visually inviting?
If the answer is no, there’s an easy way to fix that problem. Just get rid of all your clutter! According to sleep experts, a messy bedroom causes distractions and prevents you from falling asleep because it’s a reminder of all the things you need to do.
2. Is your bed is comfortable?
Do you have enough room to stretch and turn comfortably? Do you often wake up with a sore back or an aching neck? It may be time to invest in a new mattress and/or different pillow.
3. Do distractions prevent you from falling asleep?
A television, phone or computer in your bedroom can keep you awake. Try masking outside noise with a fan, recordings of soothing sounds, or white noise. Earplugs may also help.
4. Is the temperature and humidity in your room conducive to sleep?
Yes, the temperature of your bedroom affects sleep. Most people sleep best in a slightly cool room (around 65° F or 18° C) with adequate ventilation. A bedroom that is too hot or too cold can interfere with quality sleep.
5. Have you created any special bedtime rituals?
Sleep experts say you should refrain from drinking coffee and alcohol or eating a heavy meal for at least two hours before your regular bedtime. It’s also a good idea to wind down for at least an hour with music or a book. And by all means, avoid having stressful conversations late in the evening that might occupy your mind when you’re in bed.
