Have you been wondering what the most expensive home for sale in the Santa Barbara area currently is? While we certainly have no shortage of high value properties in the region, some just come with significantly loftier price tags for various reasons (primarily location, size, and the number and caliber of its plush features). In this post, we’ll be taking a look at Rancho Dos Pueblos, the most expensive property for sale in Santa Barbara today, and we’ll explore the many reasons why it has a current list price of $79 million.
Own a Piece of History
Properties like the Rancho Dos Pueblos don’t often come on the market. Encompassing 2,190 acres, this vast estate is among the last of its kind and is something of a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of California history. The ranch was once part of the over 15,500-acre royal rancho from which it gets its name, which was granted to Nicolas A. Den in the 1840s by Governor Juan Alvarado.
Stretching from the hills to the Gaviota Coast, Rancho Dos Pueblos is a Santa Barbara property like no other. It has its own spectacular stretch of private beach, a lagoon, and more than a dozen residences, barns, and other buildings. From the wide sandy beach, you can look out to Point Conception and the Channel Islands and even spot the occasional migrating whale.
At the center of the property is the main house, appropriately dubbed the Casa Grande, an elegant Spanish Colonial Revival mansion with a classic red tile roof. Built in the 1920s, the five-bedroom home is steeped in casual country elegance and includes a billiard room, card room, a large living room with a bar and fireplace, and elevator access. Wood paneling is prevalent and many of the home’s original architectural features have survived, having been meticulously maintained over the years.
Moreover, since Rancho Dos Pueblos has been a working ranch for much of its history, the property also features a variety of agricultural plantings. There are avocado and macadamia orchards as well as a wide range of specimen and native plant species throughout the property.
Real Estate in Santa Barbara
Similar – though smaller – properties also currently on the market include the $57.5 million Peabody Estate, “Solana,” and a $32 million oceanfront estate on 4677 Via Roblada. The former, which has a historically and architecturally distinctive mansion as its centerpiece, extends across a little over 11 acres and is perched atop a knoll. The latter property, which has a total area of around 39 acres, is located along a bluff in prestigious Hope Ranch.
