Are You Attending The Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival?

Santa Barbara Earth Day FestivalEducate. Inspire. Act.
The annual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival is happening this Saturday, April 22, (11am-7pm) and Sunday, (11am-6pm) at Alameda Park. This year’s event should be bigger and better than ever featuring special “zones,” each created around a specific theme. In addition, there will be two full days of live music performances, speakers, the largest Green Car Show on the West Coast, and plenty of family programming. But that’s not all.
There will be a sustainable food court, a wine and beer garden, and more than 200 exhibitors with a green story to share. Other festival highlights include a Kids Monarch March for Climate, an Environmental Hero Award presentation to Congresswoman Lois Capps and plastic-free advocates 5 Gyres,
How Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival Began
In the wake of a devastating oil spill off Santa Barbara’s shores back in 1969, a group of local citizens began discussing a different way of looking at our environment. Over the next few years, the environmental movement was born. So was the Community Environmental Council (CEC), which was incorporated in the spring of 1970.
During that time, Senator Gaylord Nelson visited Santa Barbara to see for himself the damage caused by the oil spill. He returned to Washington, D.C. and introduced a bill designating April 22 as a national day to celebrate the earth.
In CEC’s first act as a newly established non-profit, it hosted one of the first Earth Day celebrations in the U.S. The year was 1970, and we’ve held an Earth Day celebration every year since. Today, our festival is the longest-running and most consistently held public Earth Day celebration in the country, attracting crowds of 30,000 or more each year. Now, 47 years later, the need for community activism to protect our environment is greater than ever.
