Smartwatch lets you know when you’re stressed out

Imagine a smartwatch that not only tells time, but also let’s you know when you’re stressed out. In my recent blog, “Meet the Apple Watch,” I introduced you to the long-anticipated smartwatch that will be available in stores on April 24. Today, I am going to introduce you to a new wearable device from Neumitra designed to help you get a grip on stress.
The smartwatch, from billionaire Peter Thiel’s newest Breakout Labs, helps wearers measure and manage the autonomic brain through sensors that alert you with a gentle vibration if you’re sweating more than you usually do; generally a good sign that you’re stressed out. This device can be yours for $1,500.
Medical research has long linked excessive stress to a host of physical and mental health concerns. Neumitra’s mission is a validated stress score to quantify daily brain health. The company is dedicated to helping people measure and manage the effects of daily stress on their brain health and performance.
In today’s busy, hectic world, less sleep, bad nutrition, and sparse exercise are viewed by some as the norm. Imagine having a tool that can alert you when you’re on the road to being stressed out. Within a few days of wearing the device, it gets to know your typical heart rate, warning you about unhealthy stress levels. The device uses skin conductance, a century-old technique to measure the electrical conductivity of the fingers, palms, and feet. This is the same technique used for things like biofeedback therapy, with the goal of teaching patients to control body functions with specific thoughts.
The plan is to load the Neumitra technology onto even smaller devices, such as necklaces or other pieces of jewelry.
