Tips on Incorporating Your Travels Into Your Home Decor

Travel around the world concept. Souvenirs from around the world on wooden table over city bokeh background to show how travelers canHome décor is a topic I frequently blog about. Not long ago, I blogged about adding some French Flair to your home. Before that, I shared info on embracing your own personal style into your home décor. Today, I’m going to share tips on incorporating your travels into your home décor to create a masterpiece instead of a mess!

When I get away, I usually come back with all sorts of items from my travels, not to mention the photographs capturing all the fun. Here are some ways to display your treasures while keeping your home from looking like a travel brochure:

1) Create a photo/art gallery
Whether it’s your own photography or pieces of art you pick up along your journey, nothing brings back the special moments like art. Placing them together into one gallery is key. Just make sure you arrange your images in a way that creates visual drama. First, frame your artwork, printing the photos in varying sizes. You might want to create an art college or designate a particular room for your vacation photos.

2) Stay away from tacky
Buy authentic items and steer clear of touristy replicas or tacky souvenirs. Make sure your vacation meets the design standard you’ve already established for your home. You want to create a space that reminds you of your journey. As one leading designer said; “Whisper your theme, don’t scream it.”

3) Don’t be afraid to think big
If you find a treasure while on vacation that just looks like it’s too big to bring home, think again. You don’t want to miss out on that one piece that will have your guests drooling!

4) Think textile
Pillows, fabric and other textiles can add that simple, classy touch that will bring back your vacation memories without ruining your otherwise perfect home décor. With textiles, there’s no shortage of ways to dress up your home in travel-found memories, and they pack easily, too.
