Unique symbols of freedom

english bulldog laying upside down on his back with reflection on white background to show unique symbols of freedomUnique symbols of freedom come to mind as we celebrate the 4th of July holiday. I just learned about one historic symbol that really surprised me: the bulldog.

Believe it or not, English bulldogs found their way into the hearts of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War I. According to legend, the U.S. Marine Corps displayed such tenacity and ferocity on the battlefield that their German opponents began referring to them as teufel-hunden, or devil dogs. In Bavarian folklore, teufel-hunden were fearsome, vicious dogs from the underworld. With its fierce and tenacious reputation, it’s easy to see why the bulldog became the visual symbol of our troops.

Whether or not it actually came from German soldiers or was perpetrated by the Marines themselves, the nickname stuck. In 1918, the legendary U.S. Marines recruitment poster depicting a fierce English bulldog wearing a Marine Corps helmet was unveiled. From then on, the U.S. Marines embraced the idea of being likened to the courageous bulldog, and soon adopted the English bulldog as the unofficial U.S. Marine Corp mascot.

Today, English bulldogs continue to stand alongside marines, military personnel, and law enforcement officials across the country as they fight for our safety and work hard to secure our freedom. To heroic law enforcement officials, bulldogs are both treasured companions and trusted allies.

Those who own them know that bulldogs are more than just military and police dogs. They are beloved pets and loyal friends to Americans such as Adam Sandler, Truman Capote, and Olivia Wilde, and chosen mascot of nearly four-dozen universities and 250 secondary schools nationwide. For many families, bulldogs are popular pets for their sweet demeanor and cuddle-able physique. While these animals are valued for their spirit and bravery, bulldogs are also known for being affectionate, kind, and loyal.
